The night-time diaper is the only one worn for 10 to 12 hours in a row, with the baby lying down and producing plenty of wee. It is also the one that, when it fails, wakes everyone up. That is why it deserves its own choice, often different from the daytime diaper. This guide explains what changes at night, what to look for, which options we have by age and the practical tricks that solve most early-morning leaks.
Why night-time is different
Three things come together: time (a daytime diaper is worn for 2 to 3 hours, a night-time one for 4 to 5 times longer), position (lying on their back or side, urine collects at the back or at the leg elastics instead of falling into the centre of the core) and volume (from 6 months, with soups, purées and water, night-time urine production increases a lot). A diaper that is far from full during the day may not last until morning.
What to look for in an overnight diaper
- A higher-capacity core. Ranges with boosted absorbency (at Dodot, Bebé-Seco Extra Absorption and the "+" sizes) have more absorbent material spread throughout the diaper, including at the back.
- Fast absorption. A big gush in the middle of the night has to be absorbed in seconds, or it runs towards the elastics.
- High barriers and an elastic waist at the back. These are what hold the liquid in when the baby is lying down.
- A surface that stays dry. Twelve hours of damp skin is a recipe for diaper rash. The inner layer should feel dry to the touch in the morning.
- A size with room to spare for the night. Many families use one size up at night compared with the day: more core and more coverage at the back.
The options we sell, by age
| Age | Night-time diaper | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 3 months | The same as during the day (Dodot Sensitive, Bambo Nature, Moomin Baby) | The baby wakes to feed every 3 hours and the diaper is changed at those times. No overnight range needed. |
| 3 to 6 months | Dodot Sensitive or Moomin Baby, one size up if there are leaks | Nights of 6 to 8 hours; most babies do not yet need boosted absorbency. |
| 6 to 12 months | Dodot Bebé-Seco Extra Absorption Size 3 to Size 5, or Bambo Nature Size 4 and Size 5 | Long nights and more fluids. This is where the boosted range starts to pay off. |
| 12 to 24 months | Dodot Bebé-Seco Size 4+ to Size 6, Dodot Activity Size 5+ and Size 6+, Moomin Baby Size 5 and Size 6 Big Pack | Maximum night-time volume; the "+" sizes have a bigger core. |
| 2 years and over | Dodot Bebé-Seco Size 6, Bambo Nature Size 6 and Size 7, or Bambo Nature Pants Size 6 and Size 8 | Children who already wear underwear during the day keep a classic diaper or high-absorbency pants at night until they are dry at night. |
You will find these ranges in Dodot Bebé-Seco, Dodot Activity, Bambo Nature and Moomin Baby. All the overnight options are also gathered in overnight diapers.
The day and night strategy that saves money
Boosted-absorbency diapers cost more per unit. As they are only needed once a day, the most economical way to use them is to split: a normal range (or the cheapest large box) for the 4 to 5 daytime changes, and a boosted range just for the night. A pack of 48 to 66 overnight diapers lasts two months. For the price per diaper of each option, see cheap diapers in Portugal.
Night-time leaks: the five tricks that solve most of them
- Change right before bedtime, at the last breastfeed or bottle, so the diaper starts the night empty.
- For boys, point the penis downwards when fastening the diaper. It is the number one cause of leaks at the waist.
- Pull the back up well and check that the leg barriers are turned out. When lying down, the liquid goes to the back.
- Go up a size just for the night if the diaper is full in the morning but has not leaked; if it leaks even with room to spare, switch to a more absorbent range.
- Loose pyjamas and sleeping bag. Tight clothing compresses the core and pushes the liquid towards the elastics.
If none of this works and the diaper is soaked at 3 in the morning, the solution may be a change in the middle of the night for a while, especially on days with lots of fluids or illness.
Night and skin: 12 hours of protection
Because the night-time diaper is worn for so long, it is the one that causes the most diaper rash. Two simple measures: a thin layer of barrier cream before bed during risky phases (teething, a virus, new foods) and a diaper whose surface stays dry. See diaper rash: how to prevent and treat it and diapers for sensitive skin.
Older children: overnight diapers until night-time dryness
Daytime potty training usually happens between 2 and 3 years; night-time control can take another year or two, and that is normal. At this stage the child wears underwear during the day and a diaper at night. The options: a large classic diaper (Dodot Bebé-Seco Size 6, Bambo Nature Size 6 and Size 7) or diaper pants (Bambo Nature Pants Size 6 and Size 8), which the child can put on alone and which help maintain independence. Choose by absorbency: classic diapers usually hold more. For this stage, see diapers for 1-year-olds and walking toddlers.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a special diaper for the night?
Until 4 to 6 months, no. After that, if the diaper is full in the morning or leaks, a more absorbent range pays off.
Should I wake my baby to change the diaper?
No, if the diaper is holding up and there is no poo. If there is poo, always change it, even if the baby wakes up.
Is one size up at night safe?
Yes, as long as the baby is within the weight range of the larger size and the diaper is not loose at the legs.
Which is the best overnight diaper?
In our experience, Dodot Bebé-Seco Extra Absorption in the "+" sizes is the one most families use for the night. Bambo Nature in the large sizes is the eco-friendly alternative with good capacity.
Summary
At night the diaper works for 12 hours lying down: choose a more absorbent range from 6 months, consider one size up, change before bed, point the penis down for boys and check the barriers. Separate day and night so you only use the boosted diaper where it is needed.
