Cheap diapers in Portugal: price per diaper, brands and how to save

World Diapers

Looking for cheap diapers is one of the first things any family does when a baby is born. The problem is that "cheap" almost never means the pack with the lowest price on the shelf. It means the diaper that costs less per unit, lasts the night without leaks and does not make you change twice as often. In this guide we explain how to compare prices properly, show the real cost per diaper of the brands we sell at comprarfraldas.pt and point out where the savings that really make a difference at the end of the month are.

What "cheap diapers" really means

There are three ways of looking at the price of a diaper and only one of them is useful:

  • Pack price. It is the number that catches your eye, but it is misleading. A pack of 24 units at €6 looks cheaper than a pack of 180 units at €52, and yet the second option costs almost half as much per diaper.
  • Price per diaper. Divide the pack price by the number of units. It is the only metric that lets you compare brands, sizes and packs with each other.
  • Real monthly cost. Price per diaper multiplied by the number of diapers your baby uses per day, plus what you lose to leaks, extra changes and diaper rash creams. This is the number that weighs on your budget.

A "cheap" diaper that leaks at night means changing sheets, pyjamas and diaper at 3 in the morning. A diaper that causes irritation adds the cost of cream and more frequent changes. So buying well means finding the best price per diaper on a diaper that works for your baby.

How to calculate the price per diaper (and the monthly cost)

The maths is simple: pack price ÷ number of diapers = price per diaper. Then multiply by daily use and by 30 days. As a reference, a newborn uses 8 to 10 diapers a day, a baby aged 3 to 12 months around 6, and a child over one year old 4 to 5. We have a dedicated article on how many diapers a baby uses per month with figures by age.

A practical example: a diaper at €0.30 with 6 changes a day comes to €1.80 a day, or around €54 a month. The same calculation with a diaper at €0.40 gives €72 a month. A difference of 10 cents per diaper is worth €18 a month and more than €200 a year.

Price per diaper of the brands we sell in Portugal

The table below uses the prices in our shop in September 2026 (they may vary with promotions). It shows how the pack format changes everything, even within the same brand.

Diaper Units Pack price Price per diaper
Dodot Bebé-Seco Size 3 (6-10 kg), monthly box 186 €32.69 €0.18
Dodot Sensitive Size 2 (4-8 kg), large pack 174 €40.80 €0.23
Dodot Sensitive Size 2 (4-8 kg), on promotion 58 €14.93 €0.26
Moomin Baby Size 1 (2-5 kg) 25 €6.99 €0.28
Bambo Nature Size 2 (3-6 kg), Paper Bag 180 €52.56 €0.29
Moomin Baby Size 2 (3-6 kg) 56 €16.99 €0.30
Bambo Nature Size 3 (4-8 kg), Paper Bag 168 €51.84 €0.31
Dodot Bebé-Seco Extra Absorption Size 4+ (10-15 kg), box 248 €77.80 €0.31
Dodot Bebé-Seco Extra Absorption Size 3 (7-11 kg), standard pack 66 €20.79 €0.32
Bambo Nature Size 4 (7-14 kg), Paper Bag 144 €50.04 €0.35
Moomin Baby Size 4 (7-14 kg), Big Pack 63 €22.99 €0.36
Bambo Nature Size 5 (12-18 kg), Paper Bag 132 €50.04 €0.38
Dodot Bebé-Seco Extra Absorption Size 5 (11-16 kg), standard pack 54 €20.79 €0.39
Moomin Baby Size 4 (7-14 kg), standard pack 42 €16.99 €0.40
Bambo Nature Size 6 (16 kg+), Paper Bag 120 €50.04 €0.42
Dodot Bebé-Seco Extra Absorption Size 6 (14 kg+), standard pack 48 €20.79 €0.43
Bambo Nature Pants Size 4 (7-12 kg), diaper pants 20 €10.20 €0.51

Three conclusions stand out from the table:

  1. The pack format matters more than the brand. The 186-unit box of Dodot Bebé-Seco Size 3 works out at €0.18 per diaper, almost half the €0.32 of the 66-unit pack of Bebé-Seco Extra Absorption Size 3, the higher-absorbency version of the same range.
  2. The price goes up with the size. Across all brands, Sizes 5 and 6 cost 30 to 50% more per unit than Sizes 2 and 3. It is part of the budget and worth planning for.
  3. Eco-friendly diapers are no longer a luxury. Bambo Nature in a Paper Bag costs between €0.29 and €0.42, on a par with Dodot in a standard pack.

Where the real savings are

1. Buy large packs of the size your baby already wears

This is the biggest saving available, between 20 and 45% per diaper. The rule is to buy in bulk only the current size, never the next one "to get ahead". A baby can jump a size in three weeks and the box is left half used.

2. Get the size right

A diaper that is too small leaks and marks the skin; one that is too big leaks at the legs and is wasted on unnecessary changes. Both cost money. If in doubt, see how to choose the right diaper size.

3. Make the most of promotions sensibly

Diaper promotions are frequent and worth taking advantage of, on two conditions: the size must be the current one and the quantity should not exceed around six weeks of use. We flag items on promotion on the collection pages, so you do not need to go looking.

4. Separate day and night

Many families use a more economical diaper during the day and a more absorbent one just for the night. That is 5 or 6 budget diapers for every 1 premium diaper, and your baby sleeps dry. We explain how to choose in overnight diapers: how to choose.

5. Avoid emergency purchases

Running out of diapers on a Sunday night means paying for a small pack at convenience prices. Keeping a week's reserve and ordering in advance solves the problem. If you prefer to buy online with home delivery, see our guide to buying diapers online.

When saving can cost you more

There are two cases where switching to the cheapest diaper is usually a bad idea. The first is sensitive skin or skin prone to diaper rash: a saving of 5 cents per diaper disappears with the first tube of cream and the extra changes. Our article on diapers for sensitive skin explains what to look for. The second is the night: a diaper that cannot last 10 to 12 hours costs you a change of bedding and a bad night's sleep, and that does not show up in any price table.

How to test a new diaper without wasting money

Before buying a large box of a new brand, buy the small pack and use it for 5 to 7 days. Assess four things: whether there were leaks (and in what situations), whether the skin was marked or red, whether the diaper still feels dry to the touch after 3 to 4 hours, and whether the fit at the legs and waist is easy. If it passes the test, then buy the large pack. The 25-unit pack of Moomin Baby Size 1 at €6.99 and the 40 to 44-unit packs of Bambo Nature work well as trial diapers.

How much a month of diapers costs in Portugal

Combining the price per diaper with use by age, the monthly cost is roughly as follows:

Stage Diapers/day With a diaper at €0.20 With a diaper at €0.30 With a diaper at €0.40
Newborn (0-3 months) 9 €54 €81 €108
Baby (3-12 months) 6 €36 €54 €72
Over 12 months 4.5 €27 €41 €54

Over the first two and a half years, the difference between always buying small packs and always buying large boxes easily reaches €400 to €600. We did the maths in more detail in how much diapers cost per month.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest diaper in Portugal?

Per unit, the most economical option in our shop right now is Dodot Bebé-Seco Size 3 in a box of 186 units, at around €0.18 per diaper. In larger sizes, Dodot Bebé-Seco Extra Absorption Size 4+ in a box of 248 and Bambo Nature in a Paper Bag are in the €0.31 to €0.38 range.

Is it worth buying diapers in bulk?

Yes, as long as it is the size your baby wears now and the quantity does not go beyond six weeks of use. The saving per diaper can reach 45%.

Are own-brand diapers cheaper?

The pack price is often lower, but it is worth working out the cost per unit and testing them for a week. If there are more leaks or irritation, the saving disappears.

Are eco-friendly diapers much more expensive?

Not anymore. Bambo Nature in a Paper Bag costs between €0.29 and €0.42 per diaper, the same range as Dodot in a standard pack.

How do I know if I am paying too much?

If you are paying more than €0.35 per diaper in Sizes 2 to 4, or more than €0.45 in Sizes 5 and 6, there is almost certainly a larger pack or a promotion that works out cheaper.

Summary

Cheap diapers are the ones that cost less per unit and work for your baby, not the ones in the cheapest pack. Always compare the price per diaper, buy large packs of the current size, use promotions with a rule, separate day and night if it makes sense and never save at the expense of your baby's skin. With these five rules, most families save €15 to €25 a month without changing brand.
