Diapers for 1-Year-Olds and Walking Toddlers: Sizes, Diaper Pants and Standing Changes

World Diapers

When your baby starts crawling fast and then walking, the diaper faces a new problem: movement. It opens at the back when they sit down, slips when they run, and changing them lying down turns into a battle. At the same time, consumption drops (4 to 5 diapers a day) and sizes go up (Size 4 to Size 6). This guide explains what changes between the first and third year, how to choose between classic diapers and diaper pants, and how to organise day, night and nursery.

What changes from age 1

  • Constant movement. The diaper has to stay in place while crawling, climbing stairs and running. An elastic waist all the way round and a narrower cut between the legs make the difference.
  • Fewer changes, more volume per change. The bladder holds on for longer, so each diaper receives more wee at once. Fast absorption matters more than with a younger baby.
  • Larger, more expensive sizes. Sizes 4 to 6 cost 30 to 50% more per unit than Sizes 2 and 3. Large boxes pay off even more at this stage, because each size lasts many months.
  • Wanting to take part. From 18 months, many children want to "put on" the diaper by themselves. That is the moment for diaper pants.

What size for a 1-year-old

At 12 months most babies weigh between 8.5 and 11 kg, which corresponds to Size 4 in most brands; at 2 years, between 11 and 14 kg, Size 5; at 3 years, 13 to 16 kg, Size 5 or Size 6. But always choose by weight, not age, and remember that the ranges vary by brand:

Size Dodot Bebé Seco Dodot Activity Moomin Baby Bambo Nature Bambo Nature Pants
Size 4 10-15 kg (Size 4+) 10-15 kg (Size 4+) 7-14 kg 7-14 kg 7-12 kg
Size 5 11-16 kg 12-17 kg (Size 5+) 10-16 kg 12-18 kg 11-17 kg
Size 6 14 kg or more 14-19 kg (Size 6+) 12-24 kg 16 kg or more 15 kg or more
Sizes 7 and 8 18 kg or more (Size 7) 19 kg or more (Size 8)

Classic diaper or diaper pants?

Both have their place, and many families use both.

  • Classic diaper (with tabs): more absorption per unit, a fine-tuned fit at the waist, cheaper per diaper. Best for nights and for children who still lie down for changes without fuss. Ranges with a flexible fit, such as Dodot Activity Extra, were designed for this stage.
  • Diaper pants: they go on standing up like underwear and tear at the sides to come off. A change takes 20 seconds with the child standing, ideal for nursery, the park and children who never stop. They cost more per unit (Bambo Nature Pants work out at about €0.51) and absorb less than an extra-absorbent classic diaper.

The most common combination from 12 to 18 months: pants by day, an extra-absorbent classic diaper at night. See Dodot Activity and Bambo Nature (diapers and Pants).

How to change a child who never stops

  1. Change standing up whenever it is just a wee. With diaper pants, pull down, tear the sides, clean and put the new one on like underwear. It can be done with a classic diaper too, by leaning the child against a wall or your leg.
  2. Lying down only for a poo, with something in their hands (a small toy, a book) to keep them busy for those 60 seconds.
  3. Have everything at hand before you start: diaper open, wipes out, a bag for the dirty one. A disposable changing mat protects the sofa or floor.
  4. Give your child a job: holding the wipe, choosing the diaper, putting the dirty one in the bin. It reduces resistance.

Day, night and nursery

During the day, 3 to 4 changes, every 3 hours or when the indicator changes colour. At night, an extra-absorbent diaper, often one size up; the details are in overnight diapers. At nursery, ask how and when they change: many prefer diaper pants for speed and ask for one pack a week labelled with the child's name. Always send one or two sizes up as a reserve, because children grow in spurts at this age.

How much this stage costs

With 4 to 5 diapers a day in Size 4 and Size 5, that is 120 to 150 diapers a month. In large boxes (Dodot Bebé Seco Size 4+, box of 248 at about €0.31, Bambo Nature Paper Bag at €0.35 to €0.38), the cost is between €40 and €55 a month; in small packs or diaper pants, between €55 and €75. As each size lasts 6 to 12 months, this is the stage when large boxes pay off most. See how much diapers cost per month and how many diapers a baby uses.

Signs that potty training is approaching

Between 2 and 3 years, most children show signs of readiness: a dry diaper for 2 hours or more, being bothered by a dirty diaper, telling you (before or after), interest in the toilet and being able to pull their trousers down. Diaper pants help with this transition, because the child learns to pull them down and up by themselves. We have a guide on when to start potty training and another on the signs of readiness.

Frequently asked questions

What diaper size does a 1-year-old wear?

Usually Size 4, for 8.5 to 11 kg. Check by weight and brand, because the ranges vary.

When should we switch to diaper pants?

When changing lying down becomes difficult, generally between 9 and 14 months. Bambo Nature Pants start at 7 kg.

Do diaper pants absorb as much as classic diapers?

Generally a little less than an extra-absorbent classic diaper. For nights, many families stick with the classic.

How many diapers does a 2-year-old use?

Between 3 and 5 a day, one of them at night, which means 90 to 150 a month.

Summary

From age 1, the diaper has to keep up with movement: choose by weight (Size 4 to Size 6), consider diaper pants by day and keep an extra-absorbent classic diaper for nights, learn to change standing up and buy in large boxes, because each size lasts many months. When the diaper starts staying dry for hours, potty training is on its way.
