Baby Wipes or Water for Cleaning Your Baby: Which Is Best (and Pure Water Wipes)

World Diapers

It is one of the first questions new parents ask: should you clean your baby with water and cotton wool, as grandmothers used to, or with baby wipes, as everyone does now? The honest answer is that both are good, each has its moment, and pure water wipes have blurred the difference. This article compares the options for skin safety, practicality and cost, and tells you when to use each one.

What paediatricians say

The most common advice is to use warm water and cotton wool or a soft cloth in the first days of life, while the skin is still adapting and the umbilical stump is healing, and then move on to gentle wipes without fragrance or alcohol. Dermatological studies from the last two decades show that well-formulated wipes (suitable pH, fragrance-free) are as safe as water and, because they remove stool residue better, may even reduce diaper rash. What causes harm is not the wipe itself; it is fragrance, alcohol, rubbing and closing the diaper while the skin is still damp.

Water and cotton wool: advantages and limits

For: zero ingredients, zero cost, zero waste, and the gentlest option on irritated skin or established diaper rash. Against: it is less practical (you need warm water and cotton wool to hand, and 8 to 10 changes a day), it cleans sticky poos less well, it is difficult away from home, and it requires drying the skin very thoroughly, because water left in the folds causes as much irritation as any wipe.

Baby wipes: advantages and limits

For: they clean better and faster, especially poos, they work anywhere, and today's fragrance-free formulas are well tolerated by the vast majority of babies. Against: they cost money (€10 to €45 a month depending on age and format), they create waste, and those with fragrance, alcohol or long ingredient lists can irritate. Choosing the right wipe is explained in the guide to the best baby wipes.

Pure water wipes: the middle ground

There is a category of wipes made precisely to answer this question: those with purified water as almost the only ingredient. WaterWipes contain 99.9% water and a drop of fruit extract; Dodot Bebé Aqua Pure contain 99% water, with no fragrance or alcohol. On the skin, they behave like water and a cloth; in your hand, they are a wipe. They are the usual choice for newborns, sensitive skin and anyone who wants the convenience without the ingredient list. They cost a little more per wipe (6 to 9 cents, compared with 3 to 4 for a basic wipe), but in boxes the difference shrinks. We describe Dodot Aqua Pure in detail in Dodot baby wipes: benefits and reviews.

When to use each option

Situation Best option Why
First days of life Warm water and cotton wool Skin still adapting, umbilical stump healing
Home routine, baby with no skin problems Fragrance-free wipes (water-based or basic) Practicality and good cleaning
Established diaper rash Warm water and a cloth, dry well The gentlest option while the skin recovers
Sensitive or atopic skin Pure water wipes, or water Fewer ingredients in contact with the skin
Away from home, nursery, travel Baby wipes There is no practical alternative
Sticky or runny poo Wipes, then water if needed They clean better without rubbing

How much each approach costs

Water and cotton wool: cotton wool costs €2 to €4 a month for a newborn. Basic fragrance-free wipes in a box (Bambo Nature Fragrance-Free Basic at 3 cents): €20 to €25 a month for a newborn, €10 to €12 later on. Pure water wipes in a box (WaterWipes at 6 cents): €40 to €45 a month for a newborn, €20 to €25 later on. Many families combine them: water at home on calm days, wipes when out and for poos. Prices by format are in prices of Dodot and other brands' baby wipes.

How to clean well, with water or a wipe

  1. Always from front to back, especially for girls.
  2. Without rubbing: wipe and let the moisture loosen the dirt.
  3. Clean the creases of the thighs and groin, where stools hide.
  4. Pat dry gently before closing the diaper. This step is the same for water and for wipes, and it does the most to prevent diaper rash.
  5. Let the skin air for a minute whenever you can.

Frequently asked questions

Are baby wipes bad for newborns?

Fragrance-free, alcohol-free ones are not. In the first days many paediatricians prefer water; after that, gentle wipes are safe.

Are pure water wipes the same as water?

On the skin, almost: 99 to 99.9% water and no fragrance. The difference is convenience and price.

Can I use tap water?

Yes, warm and clean. It does not need to be boiled for healthy full-term babies, unless your paediatrician advises otherwise.

What about homemade wipes (cotton wool soaked in water)?

They work if used straight away. Do not prepare them in advance, because standing water picks up bacteria.

Summary

Water and cotton wool in the first days and during diaper rash flare-ups; fragrance-free wipes for everyday use and away from home; pure water wipes (WaterWipes, Dodot Aqua Pure) when you want the best of both worlds. Either way, clean without rubbing and dry well before closing the diaper.
