How do you know if your newborn's diaper fits well?

World Diapers

Diaper fit is one of those details that makes all the difference and that few people explain to parents before the birth. A well-fitted diaper prevents leaks, protects the skin and keeps your newborn comfortable for hours. A poorly fitted diaper, even an excellent one, fails at its two main jobs: containing and keeping dry.

In this article we show you how to check the fit in a few seconds, which signs point to a problem and what to correct in each case.

The quick four-point check

After fastening the diaper, check these four points:

  • Waist: you should be able to fit one or two fingers between the diaper and the tummy, with no gap and no pressure
  • Legs: the elastics should sit against the thigh, without leaving open gaps
  • Inner barriers: the leak-guard barriers should be turned outwards, never folded inwards
  • Height: at the back, the diaper should cover the lower back well; at the front, it should sit below the umbilical cord stump until it falls off

This takes seconds and prevents most problems.

Signs the diaper is too tight

  • Visible red marks on the waist or thighs after removing it
  • Adhesive tabs fastened at their maximum stretch
  • Irritated skin where the elastics touch
  • Discomfort for your baby, especially after feeds

Light, temporary marks can be normal, but deep and persistent marks mean it is time to go up a size or try a brand with a different cut.

Signs the diaper is too loose

  • Frequent leaks of wee or poo, especially at the legs and back
  • A diaper that slips or twists when your baby is picked up
  • Visible gaps between the elastic and the thigh
  • Tabs that almost overlap in the middle

With a newborn's runny poo, a gap at the legs is almost a guarantee of a leak. If your baby poos often, also see Newborn pooing a lot: which diaper to choose.

When the problem is the size

If the diaper is fitted correctly and you still see signs of tightness or gaps, the size is probably no longer right. Weight is the main criterion, but body shape counts too: some babies are longer, others have chubbier thighs.

To decide between sizes, see How to choose the right diaper size for your baby and the difference between newborn size and Size 1 diapers.

When the problem is how it is put on

Many leaks blamed on the diaper can be solved with small adjustments to how it is put on:

  • Run a finger along the leg elastics after fastening, to position them against the thigh
  • Open out the inner barriers fully before putting the diaper on
  • Centre the diaper so the tabs fasten symmetrically
  • Pull the back up well before fastening, to cover the lower back

In the first weeks, also remember the belly button area: the diaper should sit below the stump. We explain the care involved in the article Newborn belly button care.

A good fit also protects the skin

Friction and moisture are the main causes of diaper rash. A well-fitted diaper reduces rubbing and keeps the absorbent core working where it should. If your baby's skin is reactive, read the guide Diapers for sensitive skin: how to prevent diaper rash as well.

At this stage, diapers with an anatomical cut and soft materials help achieve a good fit:

You can see all the options in the Newborn Diapers collection.

Conclusion

Knowing whether your newborn's diaper fits well comes down to checking four points: waist, legs, barriers and height. Marks on the skin call for a bigger size; leaks with gaps call for a smaller size or better fitting.

By getting into the habit of checking the fit at every change, most leaks and irritation disappear, leaving you more peace of mind to enjoy the first weeks.
